Evaluation of the in vitro antibacterial activity of some essential oils and their blends against Staphylococcus spp. isolated from episodes of sheep mastitis

Abstract Staphylococcus aureus and coagulase-negative staphylococci are among the major causes of mastitis in sheep. The main goal this research was to determine vitro antibacterial activity several essential oils (EOs, n 30), then five them were chosen tested alone blends against isolates. Five bacteria isolated from episodes ovine (two S. three xylosus ). Biochemical molecular methods employed identify isolates disk diffusion method performed their antimicrobial-resistance profile. relative percentage constituents detected by GC-EIMS analysis. Antibacterial bactericidal effectiveness evaluated through minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) (MBC). All showed sensitivity used antimicrobials. EOs with highest those belonging Lamiaceae family characterized high concentrations thymol, carvacrol its precursor p -cymene, together cinnamon EO, rich cinnamaldehyde. In terms both MIC MBC values, blend composed Thymus capitatus EO 40%, Cinnamomum zeylanicum 20%, serpyllum 20% Satureja montana found be most effective all Some appear represent, at least vitro, a valid tool pathogens. remarkable than single oils, highlighting synergistic effect relation phytocomplex.
